The French singer Etienne Daho, who produced and composed Birkin’s most recent album, remarked, “It’s impossible to imagine living in a world without you.”album in 2020.

When Birkin first encountered Gainsbourg, who was getting over Brigitte Bardot, it was on the set of the movie “Slogan” in 1969. The two soon started a love affair that enthralled the country.

They released “Je T’Aime… Moi Non Plus” (“I Love You… Me Neither”) that same year. Gainsbourg’s sexual lyrics are interspersed with breathy moans and screams from Birkin in this song about physical love that was originally composed for Bardot.

The Vatican and the BBC both deemed the song to be offensive.

The relationship eventually suffered because of Gainsbourg’s drinking, and Birkin left him in 1981 to move in with the director Jacques Doillon. She remained close to the troubled singer, nonetheless, right up until his passing in March 1991.

Around this time, Hermes’ chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas witnessed her struggle with her straw bag on a flight to London, spilling the contents all over the floor, and was inspired to create the iconic Birkin bag.

She is survived by her two children, singer and actress Lou Doillon (born in 1982) and actor and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg (born in 1971). Kate, a daughter she also had, was born in 1967 and passed away in 2013.
