Stuart Broad will retire after the conclusion of the Ashes series in 2023.

The 37-year-old has taken 602 wickets in 167 Tests, placing him second in Test history only to teammate James Anderson.

Broad stated that he made the choice Friday evening.

“It’s been a wonderful ride, and it’s been a huge privilege to wear the Nottinghamshire and England badges as much as I have,” he told Sky Sports.

“I’ve been contemplating it for a few weeks, but England vs. Australia has always been the pinnacle for me.”
“I’ve enjoyed my battles with Australia.” “I have a thing for Ashes cricket, and I think I wanted my last bat and last bowl to be in Ashes cricket.”

With Broad batting late in the evening, England reached 389-9 on day three of the series finale, leading by 377 runs.

If they win the final two days, they will even the series at 2-2, denying Australia its first Ashes victory in England since 2001.

Broad has taken 20 wickets in the series, the most by an England player, and has expressed amazement at being able to play in all five Tests in just six weeks.

He was a standout performer for England in Ashes cricket, claiming a record 151 Test wickets against Australia.

“I’m loving cricket as much as I ever have,” remarked Broad.

“It’s been a fantastic series to be a part of, and I’ve always wanted to finish it on top.”

“This feels like one of the most enjoyable and entertaining series I’ve ever been a part of.”
‘When I told Jimmy, I got emotional.’
Broad made his debut in December 2007 against Sri Lanka. During the fourth Ashes Test last week in Manchester, he became only the second fast bowler after Anderson to reach 600 Test wickets.

He and Anderson, who has refused to retire, are the most successful bowling duo in Test history.

“He just said ‘are you joking?'” Broad stated when asked when he told Anderson the news on BBC Test Match Special.

“We then hugged.” It is always difficult.

“I became emotional when I spoke with Jimmy.

” But, in the end, we have a game to win here. We can do the remembering afterwards provided we finish the work.”

Broad and Anderson were dropped for a tour of the West Indies in the spring of last year after being defeated in the 2021-22 Ashes series in Australia, but were recalled when captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum took over.

“I told Stokesy [England captain Ben Stokes] last night and the changing room this morning, and to be honest, it felt like the right time,” Broad explained.
“I’ve given it a lot of thought, and even up until 8 p.m. last night, I was unsure – not 50/50, but unsure.”

“However, I went to Stokesy’s room and told him how glad I was.

“I’m really happy with everything I’ve accomplished in the game, and ultimately, I knew I wanted to leave the game loving cricket and my last memories being a really enjoyable changing room.”

An England legend is retiring.
Broad has also played 121 one-day internationals and 56 T20s, leading the T20 side from 2011 to 2014, but has only played Tests since 2016.
He took 8-15 against Australia at Trent Bridge in 2015, one of a number of great wicket-taking periods that marked his career.

In 2011, he took 5-5 in 5.1 overs against India at the same venue, including his first Test match hat-trick as MS Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, and Praveen Kumar all fell in quick succession.

In 2016, he won an amazing 5-1 in 31 balls against South Africa.

Broad ‘delivered’ in ‘important times’
Sir Alastair Cook, Broad’s former England captain, paid respect to the bowler’s ability to produce on the biggest platform on Test Match Special.
“I’m a bit emotional,” admitted Cook, who played 123 Tests with Broad.

“You’re often asked about your heart and whether you’re good enough in important moments.

“Stuart Broad, along with Ben Stokes, is the one player who consistently delivers in big moments.” What a rush that must be for a gamer.”

When Broad made his debut, England was led by Michael Vaughan.

“I have nothing but enormous respect,” he stated.

“When he first came into the England team, he was just different.” He wanted to captain himself, constantly thinking about the game.
